Enough at Kings Arms
July 11th 2023: Moonstone Theatre presents;
Responding to the abduction, rape and murder of Sarah Everard, Enough. is a brand new play focusing on the perspectives of female police officers and explores the various ways that misogyny manifests in the police force.
Anyone who accesses modern media, will be only too aware of a world full of mysogony,racism,fraud and corruption across many parts of society.
Tonight at The Kings Arms ENOUGH presented a packed audience with all of the above in a brand new show from a brand new company.
In this case it was the experience of Women in the Police force, but could easily be of almost any large organisation and companies.
From the get go, there is an impactful use of 'crime alerts' from central station announcing a variety of incidents across town and asking for officers to respond.This gave a realistic feel to the proceedings and was repeated throughout the performance.
We have three cohorts. Irie (Riah Amelle) is the young, fresh recruit. Wide eyed and full of idealism and the prospect of helping to make a real difference to the community.
WPC Dash and Writer (Emily Hunter) is the battle hardened, slightly older and more experiences officer, who balances her wish to see justice done with a realisation that you just just have to keep your head down, don't make a fuss and don't challenge authority.
Then we have the embittered SGT Spence (Gemma Green). Power mad, bullying,corrupt and machiavellian, determined to get to the top regardless and with a clear female inclination.
We hear from each of them individually about how they see life in the force and their separate soliloquies open up the different stages the trio are at in their careers.
All are delivered impressively and with passion.
A plain set, with a moving single bar works well and adapts nicely to the various scenes presented.
Several themes run through the piece too, with coffee, dodgy Dave and the heavy burden of admin all featuring.
It would be true to say that this was quite a depressing narrative and that while we mostly would feel akin to Irie and her principles, at the same time we probably realise that much of that presented is closer to reality.
Brava to the three players for strong writing and convincing acting.
Passionate, thought provoking and very current
