Dick Wittington at Bury Met
The pantomime season has started and Bury is way ahead with Dick Whittington at the Met Theatre.
The well paced script is amusing and clever. Written and directed by Ben Richards, the story loosely follows the 14th century folktale of an ambitious young man, brilliantly played by Connor Baldwin, who sets out to seek love and fortune with his cat by his side. Fairy Bowbells, played by Naomi Wynter, helps him on his way.
His adventure starts in Bury then to London where he falls in love with Alice Fitzwarren and along the way he meets characters who help and hinder him.
Sarah the Cook is played dazzlingly by Robert Styles, an outstanding, hilarious and engaging dame.
The Queen Rat is convincingly played by Nancy Penvose who is dastardly and menacing and gets all the boos and hisses she deserves! This dispicable villain is sidelined by the characters of Fitzwarren household who take Dick under their wings.
The impressive sets and colourful costumes would not look out of place on a big city stage and Sarah the Cook's outrageous outfits are spectacular.
The surprise monster rat prop is amazing!
This production is pitched perfectly for families and the children were totally engaged. There was much playful cooperation with the audience and individuals were singled out which added to the merriment!
The songs and music carried the story throughout, but the cat's "Memories" solo was hilarious!
This Panto is a winner for all generations and has barrel loads of gleeful interaction for everyone.
The seven strong cast are excellent and Ian Hayes plays four characters as Alderman Fitzwarren, Captain Whisk, The Sultan and postman.... and much fun is made of that!
All in all the Met in Bury has a real treat this festive season and Dick Whittington is running until the 24th of December.
