Rude Girl and CC: The roar of queer women of colour

Fresh off the back of their win at the 2020 Production Music Association Awards in Los Angeles, we got a preview of the new, hard-hitting punk hip hop EP from collaborative Rude Grl & CC – made up of Jenna Dickens, Chris Constantinou, and Bunni Morreto – dropping for listeners on January 8th 2021.

Unapologetically a two fingered salute to intolerance, prejudice, and hate, the EP mouths off. The lead single, Like WOW, is an earworm. Nimble-tongued hip-hop with the grunts and twangs and slaps of grinding rock guitar, it’s the kind of dirty joy that will do well for boisterous beer throwing when we get to return to sticky floored live shows, but also wouldn’t feel out of place slipped onto the soundtrack of a Tony Hawk Pro-Skater.

A young band, but their collective powerhouse past credentials nevertheless lend credence. Jenna Dickens – alias Rude Grl – has previously provided guest vocals for Basement Jaxx. Chris Constantinou (Otherwise nown as CC), was a member of Adam and the Ants, a song-writing partner of Lou Reed, as well as a member of The Mutants and The Wolfmen. Not, of course, to disregard Bunni Moretto – the collaborative’s backing vocalist – who, I am reliably informed, is a twerking expert and was runner-up to Miss Burlesque 2018. Multi-talent.

Formerly garnering attention for their cover of “Brand New Cadillac” by Vince Taylor (and The Clash), their new EP kicks out against oppression against the LGBTQ+ community and racial minorities - equally loud, leather-jacket in-yer-face raucousness as their predecessors, but now the roar of queer women of colour that need to be heard.

Rude Grl + CC will unleash the rampant Like Wow EP on January 8th.
