Queer Prom comes to Manchester!

Queer Prom comes to Manchester!

Prom for many teenagers conjures up images of beautiful dresses, crushing on prom dates and dancing with friends. However for many teenagers in the queer community, fitting into these stereotypes can fill them with anxiety and dread. Queer Prom aims to give LGBTQ+ people the prom experience they never had but always wanted.

Following sold-out events in Brighton, London and Bristol, Queer Prom is coming to Manchester on Friday 16th August and will be taking place at Manchester's hottest new music venue – YES! (Please note: event is 18+).

Following a rise in hate-crime against members of the LGBTQ+ community and the backlash against ‘No Outsiders’ and the introduction of LGBTQ+ education to school curriculums, it is becoming increasingly difficult and dangerous to be queer and visible which is why the need for safe spaces and events that promote and celebrate the queer community are more important than ever.

At Queer Prom, everyone, inclusive of age, gender, sexuality, race  and background has the chance to rewrite their prom experience and attend an inclusive event designed for them, where they can be who they are, with who they want to be with. Without fear or discrimination.

Vicki - Creator of Queer Prom Pronouns: She/Her says;

“My prom night reflected my experience of school; I felt isolated and very much an outsider, I never really fit in and if I did it was because I was pretending to be someone I wasn’t just to get by. I did everything I was expected to, I went to my prom, I wore a beautiful dress and got all dolled up, but I still felt lost and like I was on the outside looking in.

“I decided to create Queer Prom as a way of offering the LGBTQ+ community a chance experience Prom as they always should have been able to, without fear of discrimination, homophobia and transphobia, and it has been absolutely magical to see people doing just that.”

Performers for Queer Prom Manchester include Donna Trump, Soroya Marchelle, Felix Le Freak, Mark Anthony and Lilly Snatchdragon.
