Porno Chic
The film Deep Throat, released in 1972, was a signifiant time in the film industry as the first 'adult film' to be released in mainstream cinema. Vertigo Theatre Productions have created a play wh ich tells the story of the film and its lead actors Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems. This is Porno Chic's third outing, having been previously produced in 2014 and 2016.
Harry Reems was young actor , struggling to makee snds meet and ends up doing stag films which ultimately lead him into being part of Deep Throat. The play is told from his viewpoint, and goes through the period leading up to the film and then filming and onto the effects it had on Reems' life, including his downward spiral into drugs and alcohol and his prosecution for 'distribution'.
Richard Allen, recreating Reems for the third time, gives a powerful and magnetic performance. On stage for almost the entire show, he generates energy and emotion. His performance is matched by Celine Constantinides as Linda. Her portrayal of a woman who is abused and controlled by her violent husband is uncomfortable to watch but incredibly captivating.
An ensemble cast of Alex Thompson, Andrew Marsden, Sean Roberts, Anna Hickling, Jack Egan and Kate Byron create multiple roles each, providing strong support to the leads.
Set on a bare stage with four large screens, the play uses a variety of props to establish place and events, enhanced by the projections, lighting and sound which give the real ambience to the entire production.
Writer/Director Craig Hepworth gives us drama, comedy and nudity in one amazing piece of theatre. The play is off on tour in the new year, and should be on the 'must see' list of every open-minded theatre goer.
