Avenue Q hugely funny

Avenue Q hugely funny

The winner of the Tony Awards Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, “Avenue Q” is part flesh, part felt and packed with heart.  Following five years in the West End and sell-out runs worldwide, this hugely entertaining show has hit the road and arrived at the Palace Theatre, Manchester.

Created by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (co-creator of Book of Mormon and writer of the songs for Disney’s Frozen), Avenue Q is an irresistibly charming musical which tells the story of the loveable characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues.

Sunday Times has described the show as “The best musical of the decade”, with 5 stars being awarded by Sunday Express, Absolute Radio, Smooth FM and Magic FM.

It is no wonder this musical has won such prestigious awards and received glowing reviews wherever you look.  It is truly unique, hilarious and damn right cheeky!  Don’t be fooled by thinking this is for children, as this production is filled more for adult humour and content.  It’s simple aim is to get the Facebook generation from the internet and into theatres.  If this musical does not do that, it is hard to think what will.

From all the shows I have been to see, I have never laughed so much.  My stomach ached from laughing, I had tears rolling down my face.  The comedic timings, the puppetry and simple but honest humour is absolutely first class.  The musical takes you back to being a child and watching puppets on television, however, puppets in an adult format that you have never seen before.

The puppeteers are on full display and at first, I thought this would distract from the performance.  I couldn’t have been more wrong.  The actors/puppeteers make the performance and at times, are more funny that the adorable puppet characters themselves.  They take on the essence of the character they are working with, through their movements and facial expressions.

It is a very modern production, totally up to date and will bring people to the theatre in their masses.  It has a terrific batch of unique songs, which are performed to absolute perfection.  Just when you think the production has reached its comedic peak, it hits you again and again with more joy and laughter.

I left the theatre talking about how wonderful and funny the musical was, re-living the funniest moments for hours after.  I would instantly go back again and again.  I’m quite sad that this production is only available for a week in Manchester, as it could easily sell out for longer and I would have loved the chance to go and watch it all over again.  This musical has truly revived the theatre, it is fresh and new and truly brilliant.  It will create a whole new generation of theatre lovers and inspire the life of theatre to long continue.

I have no doubt the popularity of Avenue Q is going to grow and grow the more widely known it becomes, it will definitely be a great production that will be talked about time and again.  It has such a wonderful cast of hugely talented performers and puppets, they deserve full credit for a truly superb performance.

Avenue Q is the musical like no other.  So, don’t let your life suck – book your tickets today!

Avenue Q is showing at the Palace Theatre Manchester until Saturday 31st May 2014.  Suitable for audiences aged 14+.
