Amy Vreeke live at Contact Theatre

Amy Vreeke live at Contact Theatre

To the Contact Theatre for ‘Glowing’ - a one person performance by writer, actor, comedian and women’s health advocate, Amy Vreeke.

Amy appears in a smart, modern living room to tell us about her lived experience of, and thoughts on, her journey from relationship, through pregnancy and childbirth, to new motherhood, all with the backdrop of the pandemic to complicate matters.

This is a very personal account and holds little back. It’s honest, amusing and raw. Chuckling one minute and holding your breath the next. Amy is funny, bright and instantly engaging. Very good use of props, sound and set lighting. Plus, perfect timing uncorking a bottle of wine!

Explored are - The little talked about mental health effects both before and after pregnancy and how confusing life can feel when newly pregnant.

The harsh realities of the bodies’ response to pregnancy and childbirth vs the Instagram ideal, coping with a newborn, new emotions, no sleep. Trying to get back into working life and where you fit when society has other ideas about how women and motherhood are viewed and valued.

Re-evaluating the relationship with your own parent after childbirth. Trying to navigate the day to day of life whilst juggling a sleepless tiny human, the highs of potty training and lows of house maintenance. Endless conflicting ‘advice’.

The pace of the show was perfect - the virtuosity of the changes from dramatic to comic and in between was incredible.

There is charming engagement with the audience and rapt attention was held throughout the entire show. We were all in Amy’s corner by the end.

Thought provoking, funny, tender and brutal. Highly recommended!

What a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We couldn’t stop talking about it afterwards and were delighted to share our thoughts with Contact staff who requested our feedback as we came out.

Thanks to lovely FOH and hospitality staff at Contact. A great space. We will be back very soon.
