Runyons at The Brooklyn

Hotel Brooklyn - Runyon’s Bar & Restaurant

Classic New York restaurant, reminded us of our first time in New York and we were pleasantly pleased to find an authenticity to the design.

Runyon’s, the restaurant is in the Brooklyn Hotel Manchester, just past the check-in desk, around the corner from the stepped seating area. As the name suggests, Runyon's is American cuisine NYC style and has some amazing dishes around a centrepiece tomahawk steak sharer.

On entering you are drawn into the classic American style bar area, a great place to meet friends - the bar is well stocked with super friendly bartenders including Matt, who first greeted us all. The drinks menu is inspired by New York, with some strong ties to LGBTQ+ icons from history. On the menu you will find all the classic cocktails with something special for Trans icon Marsha P. Johnson, who has a cocktail honoured in her name, created by queer Bar Manager Paul.

Paul shared with us that he had been responsible for compiling the list and was keen to ensure a year round connection with the community adjacent.

After sampling the drinks on offer, we were led past the open kitchen to our table. The kitchen allows the keen diner to watch the chefs at work and the busy chefs to inspire your choices for the night. Unsurprisingly, with a New York theme, there's traditional table seating and a few areas with benches and a large mural of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Now the main menu is a decent size with an excellent selection that includes all the classics you might expect, including steaks, burgers and huge New York style salads, but to our surprise some shareable steak platters, like the tomahawk and Chateaubriand which are always a hit.

It is worth noting that there is also a shorter bar menu for those less hungry with a selection of lighter bites.

At Runyon’s the dairy allergy of one of our group was handled with care. Our server Thalia took the time to check the options with the kitchen, and made a note of changes that could be made. Rather than offering a long list of allergens, she highlighted what could be amended on the menu. It removed any discomfort for that member of our group - at Runyon, you are treated as a person, not a problem.

After this great treatment was the food as good? Well, we loved it and every dish was exceptional. For us the highlights had to be scallops with black pudding and pancetta, they were like little pearls of seaside delight. The New York Strip was also perfect class, served rare as requested, and we all shared a slice as it was so inviting.

One dish that blew us all away was the easy Chicken Caesar Salad - just aswell you can request a doggie bag here because when we say it was huge, we are not exaggerating! A half head of lettuce, with a thickly sliced chicken breast on top, and a softly poached egg. Definitely worth ordering on your visit.

As a quartet, we normally go for regular deserts like fresh fruit, sherbet or a naughty slice of cake, but here the selection is large and varied and for a for our non-dairy person, the baked vegan cheesecake is firm and magically creamy.

The brownie is soft and fudgy brownie, served with ice cream, or you could opt for the fried apple pie sandwich, with an incredible crunch, definitely one for all the ASMR lovers out there.

As New York lovers, we can imagine spending a lot of time, sampling all the food and more of the bars legendary cocktails. And Canal St Cardholders can also enjoy 20% discount both food and drink!

Absolutely worth a visit, and full marks to the team and Thalia our server.
