Grants available for International Women's Day 2012

Manchester City Council is urging voluntary and community groups to apply for grants to hold local International Women’s Day events across the city during March 2012.
Every year the day is celebrated with a different theme and for 2012 the chosen theme is Recognise, Represent, Resolve.
Recognise because often women don’t recognise or celebrate the skills they have particularly if they don’t have a paid job.
Represent because women are still under-represented in many areas of life politics, business, media, arts, sport and science. And resolve because this will be a year to recognise the barriers women face in reaching their full potential and to work together to find solutions.

Councillor Suzanne Richards, Manchester City Council’s lead member for women’s issues said: "Every year we are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day in Manchester. And to keep the day fresh we are looking for innovative and exciting projects to celebrate women’s achievements and the continued aspiration for equality in all aspects of life.

"We are keen to get as many community and voluntary groups involved as possible with projects that are innovative and which engage a diverse range of women, involve different groups working in partnership and projects that involve young women."

Grants are available depending on what involvement your group will have on International Women’s Day. Last year funding was given to a wide variety of projects some of which included a women's creative art event at Platt Fields Park, a one day sports event in Hulme for women to play handball, a 2012 Olympic sport, as well as funding for a performance of ‘the hard way up’ – a suffragette’s story, plus three school performances at the People's History Museum.
