How To Survive A Plague film screening & panel discussion
LGBT Foundation is proud to present a screening of ‘How To Survive A Plague’ is partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Arts and Humanities.
How to Survive A Plague is the story of two coalitions—ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group)—whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these self-made activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to patients in record time. With unfettered access to a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and '90s, filmmaker David France puts the viewer smack in the middle of the controversial actions, the heated meetings, the heart-breaking failures, and the exultant breakthroughs of heroes in the making.
Post-screening, staff from LGBT Foundation, George House Trust and BHA will lead a panel discussion on activism, diagnosis, treatment and how we collectively support those living with HIV.

In June of 1987, a small group of strangers gathered in a San Francisco storefront to document the lives they feared history would neglect. Their goal was to create a memorial for those who had died of AIDS, and to thereby help people understand the devastating impact of the disease. This meeting of devoted friends and lovers served as the foundation of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. Today the Quilt, with More than 48,000 individual 3-by-6-foot memorial panels, is a powerful visual reminder of the AIDS pandemic.
All materials will be provided along with refreshments and snacks.
