Heroic Manchester celebrated as Manchester Day returns!

A host of fantastical creations and captivating stories are set to delight the crowds as the countdown to the Manchester Day Parade begins.
From a giant air hostess, a superhero baby and a giant runner to winged creatures and planes, groups from all over the city have let their imaginations loose on the theme: The Sky’s the Limit: A Celebration of Heroic Achievements.
There are only five more weeks to wait until the third Manchester Day Parade transforms the city centre once again into a spectacular procession featuring beautifully-crafted floats, dancers, circus acts, eclectic bands, and even roller skaters.
Celebrated artists from across the North West will help more than 90 community groups create the dazzling artworks that will be a reflection of the diverse achievements and stories of endeavour that characterize Manchester’s people.

Walk the Plank are again producing the Parade, linking artists with community groups and building skills to ensure the parade runs smoothly and that every participant realises their vision for Manchester Day.

The Parade takes place on Sunday 10 June and will leave Castlefield at 2pm, march along Deansgate, Cross Street, past Albert Square and the Town Hall, before returning to Castlefield.

Last year more than 50,000 people attended the extravaganza and it is hoped more will line the streets this year to enjoy the parade, the entertainment in Albert Square and help celebrate the city.

Councillor Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said: "The annual Manchester Day Parade has become indelibly printed on the minds of people across the region as one of the best loved events in the city’s summer calendar. It’s not surprising as the last two years have shown how spectacular the day can be.

"Each year I think we can’t beat last year, and every year I am proved wrong – it just keeps getting better and better."

Council Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: "Manchester Day is the perfect opportunity to get the family together for a memorable day out in the city centre. The Parade has something for all ages and the artworks are truly something to behold. The celebration is not only a great day out, but also generates a massive economic benefit for city centre businesses."

Liz Pugh, Producer at Walk the Plank, said: "Many groups are using the Parade as a chance to celebrate their own heroes - volunteers and participants who give up their time in order to make a difference. The atmosphere at the workshops has been fantastic as people work together to create their individual floats & costumes and we’d love lots of people to come along with their families to support the Parade on the day by cheering us on along the route."
