Remarkable Women

Remarkable Women

Nominations open for remarkable women

There are many remarkable women working in our city to improve women’s lives as well as women who are excelling in their chosen field and it’s time to recognise their contribution to the city.

If you know an individual or an organisation that fits this description then the nominations are open for Manchester City Council’s Women’s Awards 2011.

This year three more categories have been added to the list so there are nine in total to choose from. Categories include women who have made an outstanding contribution in business, sport, culture, art, science, environment, outstanding young woman and valuing older people.

A special award will be given to an outstanding woman or group of women in honour of Kath Fry, a former councillor in Manchester and tireless political campaigner particularly in her work to improve education and the life chances of young people.

Councillor Suzanne Richards, lead member for women’s issues said: "There are so many women who work tirelessly and selflessly to make the lives of others better and there are some women who are excelling in their chosen field. They are the unsung heroes of our society and it is important that we honour and celebrate their achievements.

"This year we have added some new categories to ensure that we are recognising the achievements of women across all fields. The new categories are for women in sport, art and science. I would urge people to take the time to nominate women they know and admire and ensure that the contribution of women in building and advancing our city is acknowledged."

Those shortlisted will be invited to the final awards ceremony, which will be held in Manchester Town Hall in October when the winners will be revealed.

The deadline for nominations is 5pm on Friday 5 August 2011. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the website www.manchester.gov.uk/womensaward or contact Alex Keelan for an application, tel: 0161 234 4263 or email
