QUEERCHESTER presents QUEER AS JOKES
Wednesday 30 July, 8pm, £5
Taurus, 1 Canal St, Manchester, M1 3HE
Queerchester is seeking support for an exhibition of art, history, memories and performance from the lesbian, gay, bi and transsexual community - with a fundraising comedy night as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival.
The comedy night called Queer As Jokes, on Wednesday 30 July at Taurus, is Queerchester’s second fundraiser for the exhibition featuring Red Raymond as compare and comedians Jonathan Mayor, Kate McCabe, Lee Peart and Simon Ramsden.
In partnership with the People’s History Museum, Manchester Music Archives, Pride Fringe, Lesbian and Gay Foundation and community organisers, Queerchester is looking for funding and a venue to host this ambitious project in August.
Queerchester’s Adam Prince said “The village has been neglected and deprived of arts and culture and especially by Council strategy. The infrastructure over the years has not been developed enough. The crisis was evident in 2006 when Canal Street was on an inevitable demise because it was only ever about drinking.
“To me the big question is where are the choices? What can we give back to the community"?
“So that is what we are trying to do, get anyone that wants to exhibit with us. We have young people asking ‘Is my work good enough?’ and it is exceptional. There is a self-esteem issue out there. A lot of people aren’t going to have the breaks to have their own exhibition.”
“There is a lot of history that is being completely obliterated and it is completely depressing when young people are not being given any choice.”
Queerchester hope to make a huge photo collage of donated photographs from the LGBT community creating their stories.
