Pride Games 2013
Pride Games is an annual LGBT sports festival. Held every year in Manchester, it was established in 2005 by a group of volunteers from Northern Wave Swimming Club. The festival was taken over by LGBT sports development company, Pride Sports, in 2006. Pride sports works with many of Manchester's LGBT sports groups to deliver the festival, which traditionally includes a range of events from 'have a go' sessions to international tournaments, as well as the only LGBT Youth Games in the UK.
Lou Englefield, Pride Sports' Director explains,
"We really want there to be something for everyone at Pride Games. This year you can take part in one of the lead-in courses, rugby league with Canalsiders or Softball with Baseball Softball UK and literally learn a new sport from scratch. You really don't have to be super fit to try something new. At the other end of the spectrum, you have Northern Rebound offering a squash tournament for competitors of a range of levels at the National Squash Centre at Sport City, one of the best venues in the country!"
Other events included in the programme are a badminton tournament, hosted by Manchester's LGBT badminton club, GHAP Badminton, a 5km park run and community relay event, basketball and a women's football tournament. The week-long festival closes with an athletics event on Sunday 9 June at Sport City, hosted by the UK's athletics network, Open Athletics. Participants in the athletics event are encouraged to go along, get some coaching in throws, jumps or on the track and then compete for a medal, all for just £6. It should make for a great end to the weekend.
