Paul Carrack interview by our Chris Park

Paul Carrack interview by our Chris Park

Paul Carrack is both a solo artist and has been involved with some of the most famous bands and singers in recent history including The Eagles, Roxy Music, Squeeze, Mike and The Mechanics, Ringo Starr and his All Star Band and Eric Clapton.

Carrack is back with his latest album Soul Shadows and is in the middle of a big UK tour which hits Manchester’s Lowry Theatre on February 21st. Canal St Online caught up with Carrack.

1. How is the tour going?

Very well. Songs from the new album are all working great live and blending in well with the “classics” making the show feel fresh.

2. You merge a successful solo career with being in touring bands, tell me about this.

It has been a really busy couple of years but can’t complain about that. I had the opportunity to work closely with Eric Clapton and some world class musicians which may have even had a positive knock on effect on my solo career which is going well.

3. You play Eagles hit, Love Will Keep Us Alive, how does that feel after the passing of Glenn Frey?

I actually co-wrote that song with Peter Vale and Jim Capaldi and it was the Eagles first release when they reformed.

I can’t say I knew Glenn that well although he was always very friendly when I met him, usually at Eagles shows.

It is always sad and shocking to hear of your peers passing away and a stark reminder of our mortality.

4. Which songs get the best reaction?

The new stuff is going down surprisingly well considering it has only just come out but people still love How Long and Over My Shoulder.

5. You have played all your professional life, does it ever get stale?

Never. I am still learning every day and hopefully getting better which means you are better able to express yourself.

6. Can you tell me about the new album and sound?

There are ten new songs and one cover version of an old Bobby Bland song. The basic tracks are recorded at home then strings etc added in a posh London studio. It is a very natural, organic sound with very little “processing”.

7. When joining established bands, is it nerve wracking?

It can be. You just have to be yourself and get on with it.

8. What is the difference between a northern and southern UK crowd?

Crowds differ all over but generally speaking, northern crowds are more demonstrative and warm…..when they are on your side.

9. If you could get four people, alive or dead for a supergroup, who would it be?

Ringo, Jeff Lynne and The Everly Brothers.
