Mother Superior a Loose Screw?

Mother Superior a Loose Screw?

DENISE BLACK INVITES YOU TO HER
LOOSE SCREW
TOURING THE UK IN 2011/12

Stage and screen star Denise Black has joined forces with folk rock guitar genius Graeme Taylor for a UK tour of their hit Loose Screw shows.  The tour begins in Manchester at Matt & Phreds on Sunday 16 October.

Denise Black is instantly known to millions as Coronation Street’s hairdressing temptress and gay mum Hazel in landmark Channel 4 series Queer As Folk.  She has starred in Bad Girls, Doc Martin, Robin Hood, Scarlet Pimpernel, New Tricks and Midsomer Murders...to name but a few.  On stage she has played lead roles at every majoring producing theatre in the country in works as diverse as Chekhov, Wesker and Albee, she recently toured in Grumpy Old Women, Calendar Girls, won a MEN acting award and is currently touring the UK and Ireland as the imperious Mother Superior in the hit musical Sister Act.

Her first love though has always been singing and she was founder member of the notorious girl band Denise Black and the Kray Sisters who frequently appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe and Glastonbury Festivals and regularly took on audiences at anarchist comedian Malcolm Hardee’s infamous Tunnel Palladium in Greenwich.

Graeme Taylor is one of the UK’s foremost folk rock musicians.  Originally rising to fame as part of Gryphon, known for their unusual and much copied ‘electro Medieval’ sound and dubbed by the Melody Maker as “13th Century Slade”, he went on to found super group of the genre, Home Service, whose catalogue includes the classic album Alright Jack.  He is also proud to have been Rolf Harris’ guitarist for the last seventeen years!

Denise has written continually throughout her career and in 2010 partnered with Graeme to form the Loose Screw, performing as a duo, a five piece - often joined by an impromptu glamorous guest.  They have performed a sell out week residency at Pizza on the Park, also Manchester Pride, Edinburgh Fringe and Cromer Folk Festivals.

Denise explains: I called my band Denise Black’s Loose Screw cos it’s sexy and fun. I love musicians, love their hands. Then at Edinburgh Fringe Festival  it actually became the name of the show: a Loose Screw being an evening with great songs and impromptu glamorous guests. You can’t be in this business this long without knowing a special someone in every port!

I like songs that are passionate and funny.  I like chatting with the audience, sharing confidences.   I write from personal experience and I do a couple of covers such as Eartha’s ‘Old Fashioned Girl’, Randy Newman’s ‘Feels Like Home’ and Dusty’s iconic ‘60s “Only Wanna Be’. My favourite of my songs is ‘Stopping Traffic’. It’s about feeling blue and buying a frock to stop traffic. That’s what Ella Fitzgerald used to say when she was dressed up nice. Add my husky vocal to Graeme’s exquisite guitar and you come up with a genre our sound man calls ‘Tarantino Chic’.

I was born under a lucky star. Imagine the thrill of landing the part of Mother Superior in Sister Act and taking to the road with the Loose Screw! I’m 53, this is my first musical. Life is hilarious!
