MMU to host young adult authors

Two Young Adult authors (YA books are those which, whilst being aimed at a teenage audience, hold signficant appeal for adults), Juno Dawson and Lisa Williamson will attend a free evening event at Manchester Metropolitan University on 23 February at 7pm.

Juno Dawson has won multiple awards for her writing including being named as 'Queen of Teen'. Alongside the popular and much-loved collection of fiction, written as James Dawson and including titles like Hollow Pike, Cruel Summer and All of the Above, Juno has also written a number of highly supportive factual titles including Being a Boy, This Book is Gayand her latest Mind Your Head. Juno is a columnist with Glamour Magazine and is inviting readres to share her journey as she transitions into a woman. This feels a hugely significant opportunity to increase awareness and to break down negative stereotypes.

Lisa Williamson's extraordinary and life-affirming novel The Art of Being Normal was the bestselling Young Adult debut of 2015. The book has garnered critical acclaim across the board and tells the powerful and poignatn story of David Piper who has always been an outsider. His parents think he’s gay. The school bully thinks he’s a freak. Only his two best friends know the real truth - David wants to be a girl. Sensitively written and told without sensationalism this is one of the most important Young Adult novels of recent years and is unmissable.

Literature for children and young people often lacks diversity so it is hugely positive that more diversity is beginning to be reflected. The organisers are incredibly keen to show the publishers that there is a market and a need for diversity in literature for young people and so are keen to make this event the biggest possible success in can be.
