PRIDE COMES OF AGE – CAPTURING THE MEANING OF ‘21’

Two fantastic events come together at 4, Piccadilly Place from August 19 – 25 this year to celebrate Manchester Pride’s 21st birthday.

Manchester based artists Lee Baxter and Jez Dolan present their first collaborative exhibition. Lee Baxter’s ‘21x21: Portraits & Perspectives’, features 21 portraits of individuals from across Manchester’s diverse LGBT community, whilst Jez Dolan’s work; ‘Pride (dis)guise – Mythologies’ uses portrait photography to explore people’s personal stories.

Baxter’s exhibition captures charisma within large, stylized black-and-white images and documents  the subjects’ Pride impressions and experiences, through an additional video installation; the exhibition ‘21x21’ promises to be an inspiring affair, containing bravado, magnetism, intellect and a dollop of glamour.

Artist Jez Dolan’s work uses as its starting point the question: “Who did you want to be when you were 21?” and will examine the fears, hopes, dreams, heroes and heroines of people’s past, and present.

Jez Dolan said “The celebration of Manchester Prides 21st Birthday is an opportunity to collaborate with people from Manchester’s diverse LGBT communities, and to create work which reflects their individuality whilst celebrating diversity. Manchester Pride is a fantastic event to be a part of, and a great opportunity to share my work with a wide audience’’.

Jackie Crozier, festival director at Manchester Pride said: “It is important for Manchester Pride’s 21st birthday that real stories and community experiences are communicated over Manchester Pride. These two fantastic artists do this in different and engaging ways, and we are thrilled to have them as a part of this year’s Pride celebrations”.

The exhibitions will be free to view, and for more information on the artist Jez Dolan please visit his website at www.jezdolan.com and follow him on Twitter @jezdolan. Further information on Lee Baxter please visit www.hip-replacement.com or follow him on twitter @LFBaxter.

Manchester Pride 2011 takes place from Friday 19 – Monday 29 of August and tickets for the Big Weekend are now on sale.
