Mark Fletcher interview

As summer rolls on, people are starting to look to the end of August and one of the highpoints in the calendar for Manchester’s LGBT community, Manchester Pride’s Big Weekend.

Canal St caught up with Manchester Pride’s CEO, Mark Fletcher for a chat about what he is focussing on and what he sees in the future for the charity.

1. Can you tell me a little about your background?

I started with Manchester Pride in 2004 as a consultant, helping with sponsorship and then did a variety of roles. In 2013 my predecessor stepped down and I took over as Interim Director to keep the team running and ensure the festival continued. I was formally appointed in January 2015.

2. What do you feel has been your proudest achievement?

Engaging with the community. There was disengagement with various groups and a lack of transparency, to have both is the key to success. I am proud that we have opened the doors for various stakeholders to have a say in the future.

3. What do you see for the future of Manchester Pride?

I don’t have a crystal ball but want to keep things on track. I want us to be recognised as a charity for LGBT and HIV charities, I want diversification and to extend our events, increasing our fundraising capacity to support many groups in the LGBT community.

4. Who would be your ultimate headlining act?

That is a difficult one, I am a big fan of music and grew up in a musical house. I want artists who represent the LGBT community, not one artist above another. I am really pleased with the variety of acts for the Big Weekend in 2015 and that we cater for the whole audience. Texas are a step away from the expected and Dannii Minogue flying in is a real coup.

5. What are you most looking forward to this year?

The parade. Last year it was the highlight. To see tens of thousands out to support us was overwhelming. The Big Weekend has a big place but when our straight allies show us support it is humbling and shows how this city supports us.

6. There is obviously more to Pride than August Bank Holiday weekend, tell me about the ongoing work you do

Manchester Pride is a charity, the Big Weekend is our flagship event but we are fundraisers for LGBT and HIV groups and stage events all throughout the year. We forge partnerships with other organisations and distribute grants to support small groups.

It is important our work is recognised in helping groups which enhance the LGBT community. We look to innovate consistently and remain at the heart of the community.

7. Tell me about Superbia

This was born from Pride Fringe Festival and is a success story. We realised that events clashed and we were sharing an audience. We want to extend the cultural offering to the LGBT community. Not everyone wants to attend The Big Weekend so we look to curate an annual programme of events that are focussed on the community. We look for other ways to engage with people by promoting third party organisations.

Superbia is the Latin derivative of Pride. We work to pull organisations together and promote. In September we will be launching the Queer Up North legacy award to encourage new works.

8. For a first time attendee of Pride, what advice would you give?

Plan ahead. Bring plenty of sun cream and an umbrella. Expect the unexpected. Be yourself, be safe and fun.

9. The Parade them this year is Devotion, what are you devoted to?

Ensuring Manchester Pride remains at the heart of the LGBT community for years to come.

This years takes place August Bank Holiday.
