'The Village Plays an Important Role'

The Lesbian & Gay Foundation speaks out about the importance of Manchester's Gay Village for the local community.

The Village plays an incredibly important role in the lives of many lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people (LGB&T), community groups and organisations. Last year alone saw The Village host key events for the LGB&T community such as Sparkle, Manchester Pride and World AIDS Day.

The recent ‘Village Charter’, implemented in February, saw members of The Village Business Association (VBA), including many bars and clubs and local charities come together to sign a charter aimed at preventing negative behaviour within the Village, highlighting their continued commitment towards the people that use this popular space.

Paul Martin OBE, Chief Executive of The Lesbian & Gay Foundation comments:

“There are many organisations and groups, like The Lesbian & Gay Foundation (LGF), who are passionate about working together to make The Village a better place for all and are part of initiatives like The Village Action Group.

“The Lesbian & Gay Foundation continues to work with all agencies including the Village Business Association, Manchester City Council, Public Health and Greater Manchester Police in order to keep The Village a safe and welcoming space for the community.”

“We urge anyone who experiences crime in the Village Area to report it and we can support them in this.”

The LGF is a third party hate crime reporting centre, and also runs a range of support services including a legal surgery, police drop-in as well as a helpline service; 0845 3 30 30 30; helpline@lgf.org.uk.
