Friends of Sackville Gardens – re-grouped, re-launched and re-planting

Sackville Gardens in the heart of Manchester's Gay Village is an urban oasis that is a hub for the community come rain or shine.

Following a period of light, but affectionate touch, a group of local residents, charities and businesses have re-formed the Friends Group for Sackville Gardens to ensure that the area remains a place for people to enjoy.  The group aims to encourage local residents to make a commitment to the gardens, supporting the upkeep of the area and making sure that everyone can enjoy this beautiful green space in central Manchester.

The group is being supported by GroBox who have committed to providing wild flowers and providing people who’ll help the group to get them planted in order to ensure that the area is blooming in time for summer this year.

The group is also incredibly excited about the creation of the Trans Memorial Garden, a space where people can remember, share their memories and celebrate trans life.

Tony Cooper, Chair of the Friends of Sackville Gardens Group said:
"It is incredibly important that we start using our green spaces within the city and start making them community areas, with the exciting support from Grobox and with the involvement of the local community we have the opportunity to make Sackville Gardens an oasis in the city for residents and visitors alike".

"The creation of a Trans Memorial Garden is long overdue, when Manchester is the home of Sparkle the UK’s biggest Trans Celebration Weekend it only seems right that the memorial garden is here and is dedicated over the Sparkle weekend this year, Friends of Sackville Gardens are pleased to be able to work with Grobox  to make a space where people can remember the hundreds of people who have died or suffered at the hands of Transphobia"

(Sparkle – The National Transgender Celebration Weekend take place 12th – 14th July 2013) Further details - www.sparkle.org.uk

The group are keen to encourage local residents and members of the community to get involved, so please join our mailing list by emailing darren.knight@lgf.org.uk.  A picnic and fun day is being held in Sackville Gardens on Saturday 1 June 2013, so come along to see how you can get involved.
