End of the Rainbow
Around the corner from REM bar, opposite H2o, just up from Baa Bar, is the End of the Rainbow - an LGBT bookshop run by a waist-coated wonder by the name of David, and a glamorous transsexual called Anna Valentine. If you haven’t seen it before that’s because it is, sadly, the fictional creation of the End of the Rainbow webcomic.
Started in May 2013 by writer Matt Cresswell and illustrator Thom Vollans, the weekly webcomic takes on a set of characters living on and around Manchester’s famous Canal Street. It’s a quirky mix of Queer as Folk and Dykes to Watch Out For, with a host of diverse characters including Aoife, (polysexual, polyamorous, polyeverything), Ionie (a neurotic, asexual artist), Joseph (chubby chaser), Tallulah Trout (drag queen), Toby (the jury’s still out) and Puffin (cat).
For anyone who’s ever been out in the Village, the weekly strips pop into some familiar bars on Canal Street, but there’s plenty there even if you’ve never set foot on a rainy Northern street. It’s a tangle of love, sex and cheesecake, coming on like the secret lovechild of Black Books and Carry on Gaying. Coming in 2014 is a print omnibus from Lethe Press and a visit to Manchester Comic-Con.
