Celebrate Black History Month
Celebrate Black History Month
October is Black History Month in the UK. It’s important to recognise Black History Month as an opportunity to learn, raise awareness and celebrate the rich history, culture and heritage of Black people.
Black LGBT history and people are often even further underrepresented within mainstream society and LGBT communities too, so LGBT Foundation are taking this opportunity to celebrate LGBT Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) lives on screen and off screen with a mini-festival of films.
‘Screening in Colour’ kicks off on Friday 23rd October 6.30pm with a screening of Campbell X’s ‘Studlife.’ This feature film, set in London, follows the lives of best friends, JJ (a lesbian) and Seb (a gay man) whose close friendship is threatened when JJ falls for Elle.
The festival continues on Saturday 24th October at 12 noon with a full afternoon programme of short films and a panel discussion with local film makers, activists and artists about the visibility of BAME LGBT lives. This FREE event is open to all but places are limited. There will also be free tea, coffee, biscuits and popcorn available! Reserve your free tickets and see the full line-up of films by clicking here.
Throughout October, we will also be talking about inspirational black LGBT people, past and present from music, film, literature and public life. You can join the conversation by tweeting @LGBTfdn your pictures, videos and messages of who you’re celebrating this Black History Month using #BHMLGBT
