Canalsiders welcomed

Canalsiders welcomed

Sunday 24 February 2013, saw the first ever Lesbian, gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rugby League club hold an exhibition match, during the half time of the Salford City Reds v Hull KR match. The team was formed of Lesbians, Gay Men, Bisexuals and Transgender Members running out as a team. This really summed up the Canalsiders motto of "One Club For All."

"We are delighted that our launch into the world of Rugby League was welcomed tremendously well by all at the Salford City Reds, from the team through to the supporters. To see the Rugby Community support all everyone regardless of gender, age or sexual orientation is fantastic." Martin Owens, Chair of the Canalsiders.

The Canalsiders are looking for players, supporters and volunteers of all skill levels and ages. They have a full schedule of events held across the year with their aim of having a Men's and Women's full contact team as well as a Mixed Touch Rugby League team match ready for the 2014 season. The team has been set up with the support of the Salford City Reds Foundation who's aim is to get Rugby League across to all sections of the Manchester area.

Manchester Canalsiders ARLFC are also delighted to announce that they will be working in partnership with East Manchester Rangers. The partnership will see the two clubs sharing the facilities at Belle Vue Leisure Center, Gorton. The two teams will use this developing site to train as well as hold match days as well as other events as these new facilities go live.

"We are so looking forward to working to promote Rugby League to all sections of our community in Manchester." Stan Sandland Co-Founder of the Canalsiders said "With the Rugby League World Cup happening and the final being held at Old Trafford. This really is a brilliant year for Rugby League. Particularly, grass roots rugby such as the Rangers and the Canalsiders to start and to develop."

Seb Rowe, Chair of East Manchester Rangers continued. "We think that it is fantastic that our two clubs have been set up at almost the same time. East Manchester Rangers are delighted that the Canalsiders are on board with us and that we all have the same aim of playing and enjoying Rugby League. The two teams have worked very well behind the scenes setting up the partnership and as that team work continues both of our clubs will grow and go from strength to strength."
