Canal St visits Vegas

Night out at at a Las Vegas casino.

Las Vegas is a place that you either love or you hate – it is impossible to feel indifferent about it. It seems that everybody who visits Sin City has a tale or two to tell. Just sit in the departures lounge at Las Vegas airport, or better spend a little time in one of the airport bars and you will soon be able to eavesdrop on a conversation of two on how things might have been if only they had stopped while ahead, or bet on 21 instead of 22.

Our first night out at a casino on The Strip was a night that we will never forget. We had driven across the Mohave Desert to get there as part of a three thousand mile road trip. It had been a last minute decision to visit Vegas and we arrived in the early evening somewhat weary after a long day on the road.

We checked in to what must be the second worst motel we had ever visited (the worst had been a few nights before and felt like the Bates Motel from Psycho) with a constantly flushing toilet and ear splittingly noisy air-con, though a room change improved things temporarily, that was until we were woken around 4.00 am by a crazed woman banging on the door demanding that we let her in and insisting that we were somebody she knew. When we didn’t she took her rage out by bashing our hired white Firebird parked outside with her high heeled shoe.

Ah the joys of travel..

We spent the evening wandering along The Strip, watched the fountains at the Bellagio, and visited the its opulent casino where we spent several timeless hours taking it all in. That night we restricted our online roulette to one spin on a slot (we won) but there were several more nights ahead of us which turned out to be great, but that first night in the casino was the most memorable of them all.

Then it was time for the LGBT bit.

Firstly we visited Snick's Place, apparantly the oldest bar on town, which was busy and despite its mature crowd had a real atmosphere about it.

Following that? Well it was all a bit of a blur?

Assuming that you love it or have always wanted to go, Las Vegas is quite something and definitely on my list of great places to visit again.
