Breakfast show couple put to the test

Breakfast show couple put to the test

Drew Tosh subjects a radio duo to a round of …

Mr & Mrs-ish

Many double acts have entertained us over the years, Wallace & Gromit, Beavis & Butthead, Thelma & Louise... But when it comes to the world of early morning radio there is only one twosome that counts – Emma & Chris from Gaydio's breakfast show.

They've been getting up at the crack to brighten our dawns for almost 4 years. They also worked together for several years before their Gaydio residency so they should know each other pretty well...shouldn't they?

Before I put them to the test (separately, so there was no conferring!) both admitted to having the worst memory ever. Things didn't look promising...

First up questions about Chris for Emma.

1)What's the worst state Chris has been in at the start of a breakfast show?

Emma:

There was one time where he'd been to see Girls Aloud in Liverpool and he literally came to the studio having had no sleep whatsoever. Despite this, he was still fine once we got on air.

Chris' answer:

I was at the last ever Girls Aloud concert in Liverpool. I hadn't slept and I ventured in on the train to Manchester. The show went OK but we had a photo shoot afterwards and if you look at the pictures I'm wearing the same clothes I wore the night before...

Points 5/5 (spot on)

2)What would Chris' theme song be?

Emma:

Well it's definitely not 'Walk Like A Man' that's for sure! He's always up for a laugh and taking the mick so I'll go with 'The Joker' by the Steve Miller Band.

Chris' answer:

It would have to be a Madonna song. I was thinking 'Vogue' but actually 'Express Yourself' would be much more appropriate!

Points 0/5 (to be fair Emma couldn't think of an answer that we could actually print)

3)Has Chris ever overtly flirted with a guest and if so, who was it?

Emma:

He flirts all the time! Even with women actually. One that springs to mind is Jessie Ware. He was all over her as I recall.

Chris answer:

Of course I have! I really hilariously flirted with Ruby Wax and also Dawn French. Oh and Calvin Harris too but he was kind of boring so that doesn't count.

Points 2/5 (for knowing he could flirt in an empty room)

EMMA SCORES 7/15 (not bad but can Chris do better?)

Next some questions about Emma for Chris.

1)If they made a film of Emma's life, who would play her in the movie?

Chris:

Kate Winslet ! She's obsessed with her. She's got a signed photo of Kate on her desk and she's even carried around a picture of Kate in her wallet. Definitely Winslet...or possibly Sandi Toksvig!

Emma's answer:

He'll think I'll say Kate Winslet but I'm going to say Jodie Foster because she's one of my favourite actresses and she's very cool and gay and a great director as well.

Points 2/5 (for the Winslet knowledge)

2)What's the worst trick she's every played on you live on air?

Chris:

She doesn't really do tricks. She's very professional. She must have done something but I really can't think of anything.

Emma's answer:

I've never done any actually even though he's done loads to me. Unlike him I am a consummate professional.

Points 5/5 (It's clearly high time Emma got her own back – watch out Chris!)

3)Has Emma ever come in to do the breakfast show direct from a night out?

Chris:

She was in London for some reason and got an overnight coach back to Manchester. It got in about 3am and she was going to sleep in the studio for a little bit but our engineeer was doing some late work so she couldn't have a nap. She was still great on the show though.

Emma's answer:

I went to see Beyonce at the O2 on a Thursday and got the night bus back from London. It set off about 11pm and was due into Manchester about 6 in the morning but it took all night. It went via Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, the whole bloody country. I got in about ten minutes after the show started.

Points 4/5 (one point docked for inaccuracies at the end of the story!)

CHRIS SCORES 11/15 (impressive)

So it's a resounding victory for Chris despite having the memory of a goldfish and usually being too busy flirting to notice if Emma's even in the room.

And finally, one final question for both of them.

What's the best thing about working with him / her?

Emma:

He always puts a positive spin on things so even if you're feeling down he's always so upbeat which is great.

Chris:

She's one of my best friends and we just click so to work together is brilliant. I'm very fortunate.
