CREATIVE LITERARY EVENT TAKING PLACE IN THE HEART OF CANAL STREET
For their joint anniversaries Peepal Tree Press and Sable Litmag present ‘Sections of an Orange: Black Queer Writing Speaks Out’, on Friday 19 August in Taurus Bar from 7.30pm – 10pm. This event is free of charge, open to the public and celebrates Black LGBTQ voices and the diversity of modern Pride.
For one night only, this literary soirée features a wide range of speakers and performances. Writer and activist Thomas Glave* will share the homosexual themes of Andrew Salkey’s Escape to an Autumn Pavement, first published in 1960. Stimulating visuals, curated by Rukus! LGBTQ Archive, will offer a glimpse of Black British LGBTQ history and personalities.
There will be performances from Seni Seneviratne, Dorothea Smartt, Rommi Smith and Adam Lowe. The writers present will also read from Peepal Tree’s Sections of an Orange by Anton Nimblett and the new anthology Caribbean Erotic.
Jackie Crozier, festival director at Manchester Pride said: “This informative literary event, taking place in the heart of Canal Street, will educate and inspire those who attend. We are delighted to have Peepal Tree Press on board with this year’s Manchester Pride Fringe.”
Dorothea Smartt, associate poetry editor at Sable Litmag said: “We hope to entertain and inspire as we highlight our Black LGBTQ authors and their on-going contribution to British/Caribbean writing. We’re grateful to Rukus! gracing our event, with images of artefacts & ephemera from the archive”.
*Earlier, there will be a creative writing workshop, for Black LGBTQ writers, led by Thomas Glave himself, at the Quaker Meeting House, 3.15pm – 5.45pm.
Manchester Pride 2011 takes place from Friday 19 – Monday 29 of August and tickets for the Big Weekend are on sale now. For more information see www.manchesterpride.com.
