Review Manchester Camerata and AMC Gospel Choir Albert Hall Sun 10th December

Great anticipation for this year’s Festive Happening, now a regular event which for many in the audience was a repeat visit, a ‘wouldn’t miss it for the world’ and a ‘nothing quite like it’ experience according to some enthusiastic people in the queue to get in.

Party atmosphere had already started before the performance, many smiling faces, warm greetings and laughter, which was such a good start.

The venue is a stunning building, a grade 2 listed former Wesleyan chapel, the perfect backdrop to an afternoon of joyous Christmas celebrations with music and voices. Lovely to see people of all ages and backgrounds sharing the space too, a sold out event so it was packed in stalls and balcony.

Manchester Camerata have collaborated with AMC Gospel Choir since 2016 and they are very much part of the Camerata family. The choir had their own band behind them too.

From the second the performance started, the vocals were breathtaking, both soloists and the group together. The support from the band and orchestra was perfectly matched.

It brought tears to the eyes and made us think of those loved ones no longer here who would love to share this. Truly a very moving experience.

There were pieces that had an almost soul/funk feel, definitely made you want to dance in time, and some which were so emotional and powerful, you just closed your eyes and felt every word.

The programme ranged from gospel greats Israel Houghton and Richard Smallwood to traditional O Holy Night and so much in between. Each part was just lovely.

We were even treated to a special performance from Wigan Youth Zone Choir ‘What’s the Point of Christmas’ which was thought provoking, amusing and inspiring.

The audience were enraptured and many were up on their feet, dancing, clapping and cheering. So many standing ovations, so much joy, truly a magical moment.

You really don’t want to miss this next year, we certainly won’t. Absolutely unforgettable.

Thank you Manchester Camerata, beautiful as always and thank you to AMC Gospel Choir for an uplifting and heartwarming performance.
