Glitter, Gales, and Gold Shorts: A Night of Wild Wonders at the Rocky Horror Show's 50th Anniversary

Glitter, Gales, and Gold Shorts: A Night of Wild Wonders at the Rocky Horror Show's 50th Anniversary

What a night at the Manchester Opera House! I braved the wild gusts of Storm Jocelyn and set off on January 23, 2024, for the Rocky Horror Show's 50th anniversary tour. Oh, what a spectacle!

First and foremost, suspenders and lab coats were the evening's fashion statement—they appeared everywhere! It was like a funfair of science and sarcasm. Consider this: fully grown guys boldly wear braces with suspenders, while one particularly fit audience member turned heads in nothing but tight gold shorts. It was a scene!

Now let us talk about about our narrator, Philip Franks. He was a total riot! With a glint in his eye and perfect comic timing, he had us all laughing. Philip handled everything the audience hurled at him with ease, making the storm outside look like a breeze.

TThe story of Brad and Janet, played by Haley Flaherty and Richard Meek, developed amidst this hilarious chaos. Kristian Lavercombe's Riff Raff was right on, while Stephen Webb's Doctor Frank N' Furter was just amazing.

What about the musical numbers? Absolute crowd pleasers! 'Time Warp' and 'Sweet Transvestite' got everyone singing and dancing. Suzie McAdam and Darcy Finden, our Usherette/Magenta and Columbia, were simply lovely. Darcy's humorous dance routine was a huge hit.

Oh, the set was great! Hugh Durrant outdid himself by transporting us from stormy roads to a beautiful castle. What about Sue Blaine's costumes? They were the icing on top, bringing brilliant colours to an already vibrant setting.

Director Christopher Luscombe has kept the play fresh and entertaining. It was by far the best theatre experience, and it should be seen more than once. The Rocky Horror Show runs at the Opera House until January 28, 2024, and it's a must-see. It's more than simply a concert; it's a celebration of fun, style, and fabulousness!
