Cluedo 2 at The Lowry
Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran have penned a brand-new story for Cluedo 2, following on from the success of the previous Cluedo. Rock 'n' roll legend Rick Black has not had a hit for years and he’s broke. But as he settles into his brand new, expensive home, Graveny Manor, he is desperate to revive his fading career and reclaim his fame and fortune…. and is prepared to do anything to get it back. Cluedo 2 introduces new characters in a new location, but still leads to the inevitable murder. Our challenge is to work out who did it, where they did it, and how they did it.
Jason Durr is the swanky Texan Colonel Mustard – all moustache and bravado, alongside Ellie Leach as interior designer Miss Scarlett who has a penchant for Rick Black, with a sprinkling of Strictly thrown in. The standout performance, however, comes from Dawn Buckland as cook Mrs White, who delivers every line with perfect comic timing, with a special mention to Jack Bennett as Wadsworth, the Butler – did he do it?
Mark Bell directs a seamless, fast-paced production making the most of David Farley’s effective design (loved the billiard table), with the actors running from room to room as they try to work out (and escape) the murderer amongst them.
Black, Green, Mustard, Peacock, Plum, Scarlet, White, with a touch of Grey and Silver – the colourful characters camp it up and romp around the murder scene to the delight of those watching. It’s all very silly, but the audience giggled along and cheered enthusiastically at the curtain call.
